Chapter Eleven
July 2023
At long last, following countless hours of detailed discussions around the kitchen table, Lauren and the others had forged a rough survival plan to see them through the next couple of days.
They didnât want to leave the house undefended, so left Kaylee on guard duty with strict instructions not to open the door to anyone, while the others split into two pairs. Charlie had initially been against this, as he felt that she would be vulnerable left alone. But five was an odd number, and as Josh pointed out, being in the house by herself would still be safer than being outside in a world that now had all the lawlessness of the Wild West.
Josh had suggested that the remaining four of them should go out in mixed-sex pairings so that each woman would have a man with her for protection. That did not go down well, sparking outrage from both Lauren and Seema who denounced his outdated, patriarchal stance. Besides, having hit it off so well, they were keen to work together, so Seema suggested they team up to acquire food for the journey that lay ahead. Their first stop was Laurenâs family home to see if they could persuade Patricia to part with some of her stockpile. Lauren wasnât optimistic they would be successful, but knowing how much she had stacked away, they had to try.
They travelled the short distance there in Seemaâs Kia, which was risky as it would have been easier to keep out of sight on foot. But they knew that if they walked they would not have been able to carry very much and would be more vulnerable to attack. At least the electric car was able to cruise along without making too much noise.
âWe wonât be able to use this car again after today,â said Seema, glancing at the dashboard. âIâve got about thirty miles left, and with the electricity off, this car will be useless once the batteryâs dead. And itâs too small for all five of us, anyway. We wouldnât be able to take hardly anything with us.â
âLetâs hope the boys find something bigger,â said Lauren, referring to Charlie and Joshâs prime mission for the day.
âThere doesnât seem to be anyone much about,â said Seema.
âNo,â replied Lauren, casting her eyes from side to side as they moved slowly through the residential streets. âThat surprises me.â
âPerhaps they are afraid to set foot outside, and who can blame them? Did you hear that woman screaming in the night? I still feel bad we didnât go out to investigate. But then what could we have done?â
âBefallen the same fate as her and drawn attention to ourselves, no doubt. But we canât hide away forever. At some point, weâre going to face a fight. Turn right at the end here.â
âThatâs why we need to be prepared,â said Seema. âItâs a shame your friend Hannah isnât still around. Sheâs a senior police officer. She might have known where we could get our hands on some proper weapons.
